A portrait of Rentap

This beautiful portrait has been commissioned by the Brooke Trust from local artist Alena Murang for display in the Brooke Gallery at Fort Margherita. Historically portrayed only as a warring opponent of the Raj, with this portrait we wanted to show Rentap's humanity - community leader as well as warrior. Our research into his life and cultural background was greatly enhanced by that of Alena as she sought to create as authentic a portrait as possible. Rajah Charles in his journals wrote of his deep respect for this great adversary and his differing world view. This fine portrait will go on display in the Brooke Gallery this year.
